Boot octoprint from USB flash drive

Hello!

Is it possible to boot Octoprint from a USB flash drive instead of a Micro-SD card. The Raspberry Pi 4 support booting OS from a USB storage device.

Yes, just flash OctoPi to the USB storage instead of the SD card, plug it in and away you go!

You'll need to have a Pi 4 with firmware later than September 2020 and OctoPi 0.18+

I recently did this with one of my instances and it was fairly painless as Charlie pointed out. It's pretty amazing the difference in speed.

Amazing! :ok_hand::ok_hand:

Sweet!! :sunglasses::+1:

What areas of rasp performance are affected?

Mainly read/write speed seems to be faster.

Thanks, if I ever get round to upgrading 3B+ I'll give it a spin. I never really liked SD cards, never understood why they were so slow.

Yeah, highly dependent on the quality of the card and class level.

Ah, sweet. Now my Octoprint boots up faster on a USB 3 thumb drive than the SD card. Thanks for the info! I can't wait for my other Raspberry Pi boards to get here so I can do that with them as well.
