Octopi on raspberry pi will not load

Hi, somewhat new to octopi and I loaded the 0.18.0 latest version on my raspi 4b and it does load and run. I decided I wanted to load one of the earlier versions to see if it would solve a couple of things. I downloaded the 0.17.0 version and wrote the image to card and when I boot it up the pi just tries to read it and then flashes the green light 4 times slow and 4 times fast and the starts all over again. Tried different sd cards. Can someone tell me why I can't run the earlier version but it runs the later one ok? Also is there a way to shut down octoprint so it does not run automaticly? I went in ssh and stopped the octoprint service, even though it was not listed, and it shut down but it restarts when I reboot the pi. I want to send gcode to the /tmp/printer port with another program.
Thank you for help on these two issues.

Because support for your Pi was not added until 0.18. The LED combination you are seeing is exactly that - unsupported hardware.
