OctoPrint vs proprietary 3d printers

Well...
although there is still many great people working on this project, i feel like the project is slowly fading a little. I feel like there hasnt just been much intrest for 3D printing as everyone now procceeds to bambulab and other soloutions... Really sad that projects like these get supported less and less :frowning:

Oh yea btw. for any mods reading this, is there an potential option for changeing your username as i think this one is uhh not really fitting to me any more...

Yes, the community as a whole seems to think giving away their rights and control for shiny stuff will never become an issue.

Meanwhile I'm working my butt off to keep things running for everyone and open up the implementation to allow easier support of even proprietary printer interfaces.

I have to say though that a click bait title like on this thread one doesn't really help in any way and actually just adds to my personal frustration.

Oh sorry that wasnt my goal. I really like this project and even supporting it. Ive been using octoprint for almost 5 Years now and i thank you for developing and updating octoprint constantly.

I think leaving your printer to be basically only usable with a cloud is gonna brake it as soon as the services dont want to support the older models.
Well thanks for your development and schรถnes wochenende

First, why do you think that? Do you have inside information that the community doesn't have?

And I wholeheartedly disagree that Octobprint is fading. We just got an update not too long ago. And not everyone has the $$$ to go with Bambulabs because I, for one, don't.

Whenever I fire up the 3D printer, the one thing I rely on 100%, is Octoprint. I admit I am a sponger as I use it but rarely contribute anything constructive to it.
Even the simplest extension add on is beyond me. I have made a couple of donations but in the end financial contributions are really heartless and may not make Foss's heart sing.
I love the way Octoprint tidies up so many 3-D printer designs, while cleanly adding such a wide choice of feature add ons
I hope it continues. I love Foss's work and dedication.
Best wishes,
Rob

For the record, OctoPrint is my full-time job, my work is 100% funded by the community, by people like all of you. So financial contributions might not make my heart sing directly, but they mean I can put food on the table and pay my rent, so they are definitely very much appreciated, and absolutely crucial for the further development and ongoing maintenance of OctoPrint!

Thats not what im saying-
anyways i still get why this post was kind of necessairy, well it was an honest mistake.

Have a great week- Charged

I'm going to agree with Gina here.
A lot of the newer solutions are closed source and tie you into manufacturers subsystems. Have a printer from a difference manufacturer? You're out of luck.
What if they start charging you for connecting more than 1 printers? What if they limit you to only their own products? What if they are collecting data on you without your full consent? Tough.
We are spoilt from years of open source development and tools.

Oh, we can even continue this list further: What if they stop you from using whatever filament you want? Stop you from printing more than let's say 10 jobs per month unless you pay for a pro account? Only allow to print GCODE created from models they sold you? Sounds unlikely? I suggest to look at the vinyl cutter market, crap like that is sadly not that unlikely.

My goal with OctoPrint is to allow all of you to use your own hardware in your own house the way YOU want. The hope is that the big changes on the communication bits of it I've been working on throughout the year for 1.12.0 will allow that even for (more) proprietary printers. But if our 3d printing community as a whole continues to vote with their money by buying from companies that are trying to enshittify the whole 3d printing market, at some point we'll have only walled gardens to choose from, and maintaining and developing OctoPrint will probably become financially impossible even before that.

We'll see. I'll continue as long as its feasible, and I hope as the 3d printing community we'll stop selling our souls, remember the freedom and privacy we had in 3d printing and do our best to get that back before it's lost forever.

Side note: Took the liberty to change the title because even it wasn't intended like it sounded, reading the former one still makes me angry

Keep up the good work!!!

I have managed to acquire three 3D printers, not sure how that happened. Each of them has Octopi as the device to control them. I have the EZPlug gizmo to do a shut down of power etc. if there are errors and to politely wait a half hour after the completion of a print to power the machine down as well.

This is a super setup and I love the flexibility and functionality of the system you have created.

I try to make regular paycheck donations to fund this wonderful project.
