New Installation Won't Connect to PI

What is the problem?

New installation of Octoprint. Can not connect. Get error messages on consol:
" Offline (Error: No more candidates to test, and no working port/baudrate combination detected.)

There are also many connection messages: "Server Off line", "Please Reload New Version, Server Available Reload Now?" (Answered YES), " Attempt Reconnect" and sometimes they started over and re-cycled.

In OctoPrint Settings - Serial - the Internet Connectivity Test does not work. The Resolve Name does work.

What did you already try to solve it?

Tried connecting with IP address and with Octopi.local and both connected.
Tried setting fixed 9600 Baud rate.
Changed cables. Changed Pi power supply. Put tape on positive USB contact.
Checked to see if I could log on to Pi OS with this network installation with Putty and I could.

Have you tried running in safe mode?

Yes

Did running in safe mode solve the problem?

No change. Except for message - Running in Safe Mode
(I don't think Pi was running anything at all).

Complete Logs

octoprint.log, serial.log or output on terminal tab at a minimum, browser error console if UI issue ... no logs, no support! Not log excerpts, complete logs.)

Here is at least a complete cycle In safe mode (these are the tails of the log after many attempts):

Heyho

Let's start with this part

You're using a stock first gen pi which is way to slow to handle octoprint properly. That's probably the reason why the webinterface hangs and reloads.
At least a pi 3 is recommended.

That won't work at all. That's also way too slow for the amount of gcode we want to send to the printer  .
The baudrate of your printer should be either 115200 or 250000 (not quite sure which one creality is using atm)

Let's check if the printer is detected by the pi at all.

Log into your pi via ssh then disconnect your printer, connect it again, enter dmesg | tail -n 20 and post the output here.

If you need help with the ssh part
https://pimylifeup.com/raspberry-pi-ssh/
Scroll down and start with the Connecting to Your Raspberry Pi over SSH part.
The first part is already done for you in the octopi image.

First, thanks for your help and quick response.

There is a bit of mis-information about the Pi version requirement out there. Theory is that it will run on anything but Pi Zero. Using my old Pi B from the junk shelf is kinda why I am here. But I suppose if I need a later model I will get it now that I am into it, I am sure tired of poking at that SD card, but first I want to assure it will work with a new Pi and it is not my lan or something else.

I just plugged in 9600 baud to see if it would connect, not run. I cleared it.

Should the original SD card be in the printer slot as it now is, or does it matter?

Here is the log I did it twice with the same result.

Thanks again.

I now have a server connection (I don't know why, it just did it) and it revealed other issues. So I really don't know if the first issue is really resolved.

I have this message upon start of Pi server:

"Your printer's firmware is known to have a broken implementation of the communication protocol. This may cause print failures or other annoyances. You'll need to take additional steps for OctoPrint to fully work with it".
Further information link takes me to a conversation on temperature errors and a fix for them. I put that on hold and will get back to it later.

Since I have a connection for the first time I tried a print while I watched closely.

There were temperature control issues. The bet was set to 60 and I wanted 75 for PETG. I tried adjusting the console, no method of entry worked. I set it on the printer screen and that seemed to work. Then, later, it went in head hesitation mode and I stopped it on the Octo console which worked. Then this console message:

"#### Critical resend ratio!

10% of transmitted lines have triggered resend requests. The communication with the printer is unreliable and this will cause print artefacts and failures.

Please see this FAQ entry on tips on how to solve this."

I looked at the tips. No obvious help.

I decided to install the plug-in for temp correction. After getting the procedure and going to the Plug-In Manager I got this message:

"It looks like OctoPrint has currently no connection to the internet. Due to that it's not possible to install new plugins from the plugin repository or archive URLs. "

BTW the Connectivity Check in the Server Menu fails.

I turned off Serial Logging and tried another 10 min print job. It ran about 8 minutes. I could now control the temp settings console, I don't know why that started. Then the printer just stopped. Here is the terminal g-code reader message tail:

"Send: N6845 G1 X121.233 Y115.001 E385.3496095
Recv: ok
Send: N6846 G1 X119.950 Y117.226 E385.43503

Changing monitoring state from "Printing" to "Offline (Error: SerialException: 'device reports readiness to read but returned no data (device disconnected or multiple access on port?)' @ comm.py:_readline:3831)"
Connection closed, closing down monitor"

Later after changing USB cables again I tried again which ended in the print head just stalling out and this message:

"There was a communication error while talking to your printer. Please consult the terminal output and octoprint.log for details. Error: Printer keeps requesting line 3263 again and again, communication stuck"

I have been warned by PrintedWeezl that the Pi is too old to keep up, much like myself. I see the potential of Octoprint and would not mind buying a new Pi if that solved the problems but I think I have unrelated internet issues that a new Pi would not fix.

So to summarize:

  1. I can not connect to Octoprint server through the internet to get updates.
  2. The print halts with serial port errors.

Now what? Thanks for your support.

So, in stand alone mode, can you set the printer heat bed to 75Β°C and does it reach the temperature?

The temp communications got better as the day went by, I don't know why. So yes, by the end of the trial, I was able to completely control and read both temps in octoprint and verify it on the printer. Thanks.

I decided to take the advice offered and ordered a Pi 3 B+.

Can I just move the SD I just flashed a couple days ago to the new Pi?

Thanks.

You should be able to move the SD card.

You cannot move a card from a Pi zero to a Pi 3. You have to reflash the card with OctoPi again. It might "work" a little but the correct drivers will not be loaded if the card was first booted with a pi zero.

You could move a card from a 3B to a 3B+ but all others can't be swapped for different version of Pi.

Thank you.

It is a long and confusing thread, I am going to close it, if I can.
I never used a Zero, it was an old Pi B from 6-8 years ago. Too slow, I guess.

As I look back to last week's install, I see I installed version 0.10.0 and It did not ask what Pi I was using. If it doesn't work I will re-flash it.
I appreciate your response.

If you have a "fresh" install of OctoPi 0.17 or 0.18, you can. Even 0.16 should work.

There's nothing used in any of the python Libraries that OctoPrint or any of the Plugins use that is optimized for ARM7 vs ARM6 or the amount of available RAM? Or Python itself isn't optimized upon install? Raspbian will work when you swap it, but that doesn't mean that all software you have installed after the fact will work without being re-installed.

True, something might be Pi-specific but the majority of the software is not, especially not OctoPi preinstalled stuff - remember OctoPrint runs on Linux, MacOS and Windows as well. If you've added your own things you compiled on the Pi, maybe, but not really common.

I think we're starting to lose the point here. A RPi zero doesn't even have the power of a PC from a decade ago. So, saying that OctoPrint runs on Windows means it must run on an RPi zero is not really a fair comparison.

The point was that you can take an sd card from a 0w and drop it into a 3 (or 4, if the image is recent enough) and it should work. And I think it should as well, though haven't tried it recently.

Running OctoPrint on a 0w however? Technically possible, practically unrecommended.

For me the issue settled itself. The image I burned last week for Pi B was on a mini SD my new PI 3 B+ only accepts a micro SD. I had to burn a new one.
