What is the problem?
terminal messages are suddenly returning weird characters

What did you already try to solve it?
rebooted octoprint, checked cable connection

Logs (octoprint.log, serial.log or output on terminal tab at a minimum, browser error console if UI issue ... no logs, no support!)

Additional information about your setup (OctoPrint version, OctoPi version, printer, firmware, browser, operating system, ... as much data as possible)
octoprint most recent version , checked for updates.. Board is SKR Mini v1.2

2020-05-25 22:46:33,505 - serial.log is currently not enabled, you can enable it via Settings > Serial Connection > Log communication to serial.log

Might need to enable this ( Usually disabled for performance reasons, enable it through Settings > Serial Connection.). Does the same thing occur if you restart OctoPrint in safe mode? If it doesn't then this is plugin related. I can't stand how much noise the Canvas/Palette plugins add to the log. Did you upgrade your firmware?

I fixed this .. No idea but I had recently switched from Marlin bugfix-2.0 to marlin 2.0 I just flashed back and all seems normal again..

SKR board? I think I remember something similar in the OctoPrint Discord server and it seemed to be related to Marlin and one of those board models.

For anyone looking at this in the future (it's been a while, but I just saw this thread), that 'garbage' looks exactly like a speed mismatch between the Pi and the printer. (If I recall correctly, Marlin 2.x defaults to 256kb [or something close], but the printer is probably set to 115kb. If you can compile Marlin [it's pretty easy, really - there are instructions and videos all over the web], just make sure the serial port in Marlin is set to 115k.)
