Logitech Brio won't connect / be shown after restart

Camera model
Logitech Brio Stream and wansview Webcam 1080p
1920x1080 -f 60 // 1280x720 -f 30

What is the problem?
Logitech Brio Stream won't connect / be shown in lsusb after restart
If I unplug it after shutdown or plug it in again after restart it will be connected again.

What did you already try to solve it?

  1. Have to RESTART WEBCAMD to get video feed - #3 by Zinc-OS
  2. Brio 4k works on the 2.0 black usb doesent work on the 3.0 blue usb. ( making the 4k useless ) ( works good on the 2.0 on 1920x1080 )
  3. No 4K on Logitech Brio after upgrading firmware on Raspberry Pi 4 - Raspberry Pi Forums
  4. and the thing with tape on 5V in USB-Plug
-> Didn't help cause the problem still occurs if no printer is connected
  5. Thought it may be because of too much plugins installed so I reinstalled octoprint and am now on a fresh and clean new installation.

Logs (/var/log/webcamd.log, syslog, dmesg, ... no logs, no support)
octoprint_brio_10_08_21.log (163.2 KB) (after restart -> no webcam)
octoprint_brio_10_08_21_2.log (164.0 KB) (after plug in of Brio)
octoprint_rcam_10_08_21.log (210.0 KB) (unplug Brio, connect Wansview-Cam)

SSH to the Pi and run dmseg -w to watch dmesg, which will show you all sorts of info about the system. With that running, unplug and plug back in the camera. You should see some messages relating to the new USB device, and hopefully no errors. If you can paste the new output here so we can see what it is reporting that might help too.

Hi Charlie,

At the end even I could see that the Pi could not find a "responding" device and after pluggin it in again it found the webcam.
But what can a resolution be to recognize the cam at the startup?
Does the Pi deliver too less energy for the cam to start?
The Wansview cam has no such problems.

Well that at least shows us something I guess. You're absolutely right about how it couldn't get a response and then after unplugging and plugging in it worked just fine. But other than that I have no idea why it doesn't work on boot. Have you tried different USB ports? Maybe the USB 2 Vs 3 may make a difference. Sorry, maybe someone else has something better to say!

So, after I destroyed my configuration yesterday because I wanted to setup the MultiCam plugin I am today again on a clean installation. (Found your guide and will try it with that again )

Right now I was testing a little bit with the USB 3 and 2 ports.
You got a good point with trying the USB 2 port.
Somehow the pi recognizes the Logitech while booting and giving me a video feed.
If I switch between the USB 2 ports I will everytime get a good feed.
If I switch to the USB 3 port, the video feed stops and won't go back online. In lsusb it shows the Logitech is connected... :man_shrugging:
Have to reboot and plug it back in to get a stream again.

What I found out in addition is that if I stream in 4096x2160 while using the USB 3 ports it is no clean stream. It feels more like 5 fps instead of 30 fps.
On the USB 2 ports it works just fine somehow...

Here the actual log:
octoprint_brio_13_08_21.log (253.5 KB)

Info:
Forgot to tell that right now I am connected via ethernet not wireless

I've been through this issue with the Logitech Brio before, and it's something to do with this camera vs. the Raspberry Pi firmware vs USB 3. You even linked some of these topics in your original post

I don't remember if we ever got to a solution with the USB 3 port issue, but I can't help there.

Still thanks for helping :metal:

I read through them and tried to understand what they did there but couldn't get a hang on it

Will now try if it keeps working with plugins, wireless and the printer connected.
If something unexpected happens I will post an update.

Hi - thanks for raising this. I'm experiencing exactly the same issue - identical behaviour and the same messages logged. I have tried it with both USB3 ports on each of two Raspberry Pi 4 boards each of two USB 3 cables and two different Logitech Brio cameras and different power supplies. Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable seems always to allow the RPi to detect the camera properly.

Have you made any progress with finding a solution?

A little more information. I am powering the RPi through a DC converter on a circuit shared with other electronics, so I checked whether power was an issue by testing with an official RPi power supply. The problem was still present.

I still wanted to check whether power could be an issue, so I tried connecting the Logitech Brio through a separately powered USB 3.0 hub attached to one of the RPi USB 3.0 ports. Startup now took several more seconds, but at the end of it, the camera was found and properly connected.

I then tried the same setup but with the external power disconnected from the USB hub. Startup was again longer and the camera was again detected correctly. This is even though the RPi is now powering the hub as well as the camera through this USB 3.0 port. Maybe the delay is all that is needed. I'm now looking at options to reset the hub from a script.

Here is the relevant section of syslog with the unpowered USB hub in place:

For the time being, I've added this cheap (unpowered) USB 3.0 hub between the RPi and the camera and it works. I'd still like a fix that doesn't require an extra component.
