Error Probing Failed

What is the problem?

Bltouch 3.1 on Ender 3 v2 having issues with octoprint when doing the bed level probing and throwing a printer firmware error. If I print from the SD card it works 100% of the time. If I use Octoprint it works 30% of the time and the other 70% throws this error.

What did you already try to solve it?

Running Smith3D firmware, reflashed with latest, both slow and fast and no difference.

Not sure if this is pertient or common buti hadn't mentioned it. When it crashes it locks up the Ender 3 v2 and it must be powered off and on to unlock it. So both OctoPrint and the Ender need to be reset.
Update Jan 29th - Did a full be releveling and reviewed in bed mesh. Still crashes.

Have you tried running in safe mode?

yes

Did running in safe mode solve the problem?

nope

Do you probe the bed before each print or do you load a saved mesh?

What printer firmware version do you run?

You can get a failure if the bed way too much un-levelled (too large differences in the corners) or an obstacle is on the print bed..

Yes it probes the bed at the beginning of every print.

Firmware is listed above and I did level the bed and ran a bed visualizer and it looks good.

Did one of the probe points fail?
Usually the Bl-Touch blinks if that happens

No the bltouch is not crashing or flashing. I thought this at first because i have seen it do this once or twice. Also tried to see if there was some consistency on which probe point it would throw this error and there isn't any. Last night I printed 4 things back to back with no issues then on the 5th print it errored. I rebooted the printer and octoprint 5 times and it wouldn't work so got fed up and just turned everything off for the evening. If there is anything I can send to help troubleshoot this let me know cause I can guarantee reoccurrence many, many times daily. First print today it has already done it!

Does the probing work when you initiate it from the printer?

Yeah the probing works perfectly when i do it from the printer. Today I've done 4 small prints and it has failed 3 times so better than usual. I also did a full bed re-level just to see if it makes a difference and reviewed it in the bed mesh. I think its as good as it can get. Its very strange cause it will fail a bunch of times in a row and then work for a bunch of prints in a row and so on.

Hi folks.
I have exactly the same problem as @Fil
Have Ender 3 v2 with BLTouch and Smith3D firmware and when printing with Octoprint from internal storage of RPi I have the same error "Probing Failed".
Printing from SD card with Octoprint or directly from the printer never gives the error, works fine, the problem is only when printing from internal storage...
I already did a G29 V and checked that Probing is never failed and reads all the points.
Can someone help?
Thanks

Thought it was odd that I would be the only one experiencing this problem. Sorry you've found it but at least now i know it's not just me. I've even reloaded octoprint on my raspberry pi 3 times now and it makes no difference. With plugins/without plugins, doesn't matter. I get at least an 80% failure rate and seems to be an octoprint issue only. Just like yourself I can print from the SD card on the printer directly with no failures.

Did you try to put the official Creality firmware instead of the Smith3D?

Creality controller boards are notorious for inherently bad serial (USB) communications. Very sensitive to the USB cable used, EMI, and power or ground issues. Blocking the 5V pin on the RPi side of the USB cable is very often necessary.

Printing from the SD card bypasses this notoriously bad serial communication issue. You can change the firmware, reimage the RPi operating system all you want but until you solve the communications problem, you won't be able to print reliably.

I wouldn't wish this on anyone... The official firmware has some of the most problems we find anywhere. Vanilla Marlin or well-maintained forks usually work far better than official Creality stuff. If the Smith3D one is outdated, yes upgrade it. But don't use Creality, it is usually a downgrade.

Hi @b-morgan,
Thanks for your tip. The first thing I've done when install Octoprint the first time was to cover the vcc pin of USB cable because of that.
But this problem I don't think it's communication related because it only happens when Leveling......

@Fil, You did not use the </> button when you posted your serial.log extract. Unfortunately, some of the characters in that log are interpreted as markdown by this forum so its hard to tell exactly what is happening. It would be better to just post the log file itself. Please delete the log you have, capture another failure, and post the log file.

@phenriques3000, if you have the same problem as @Fil, then we need the same information from you as we asked for from @Fil. Enable the serial.log, capture a failing case, and post the log here.

A probing sequence can take a while to complete, while the printer appears to support busy processing, OctoPrint still has timeouts associated with long running commands. The complete serial.log will help determine if this might be the problem.

I took it one step further and built a cable which has worked fine and done 5hr prints with no communication errors.

Really?
So as @b-morgan says it's really a communication problem... Hell...
Can you tell us how did you do that cable? Thanks

I'm trying to capture the serial.log for him right now but of course the first print i did with the log enabled it of course worked! Picked a short print (20mins) so once that's done I'll reprint it and it should fail. Therefore the log should have a success and a failure. crossing fingers. As for the cable I took a working data/power micro USB cable cut it in half, soldered the ground and two data inputs, heatshrunk it and bobs your uncle.

Oh but even with that cable you have this issue right? You solder direct in the board? Did you have the pinout for that? If we can have Octoprint working fine one of my objectives was to put the raspberry inside Ender 3 v2 (in the tools box).
