Updating OctoPi / not a directory

Hello,

I want to update my OctoPi image to be uptodate.
Currently I have 0.14.0 and OctoPrint 1.3.10

I saw the blog entry about OctoPi 0.15.0 and 0.16.0, so I want to update my OctoPi.
When using the command: pip install --upgrade pip
I got error messages. So I used following commands to update pip (I thought so)

pi@octopi:~ $ sudo chown -R pi.pi ~/oprint ~/OctoPrint
pi@octopi:~ $ ~/oprint/bin/pip install https://get.octoprint.org/latest

What is the problem?
Everything run through. but I am not able to navigate into the pip folder via: cd pip
Error message

pi@octopi:~/oprint/bin $ cd pip
-bash: cd: pip: Not a directory

Is it somehow possible to update OctoPi from 0.14.0 to 0.15.0 or higher?
What do I need to do to:
navigate to pip folder to check --version

There is no such thing as a pip folder. pip is a command, used to install python modules.

AFAIK, the only way to "upgrade" your OctoPi version is to start over. Use the new backup functionality in OctoPrint 1.3.10 to transfer your files and configuration

I downloaded the latest version of OctoPi/Octoprint from this side and after the installing process, I get this error message when updating to 1.3.12.

I've never seen a message like this but it looks like something is borked with that install. Based on the error it seems pip can't build a package it's trying to install due to having nowhere to write the result

So, I did as follow:

downloaded the zip:
unziped
formated the SD (16GB ScanDisk Ultra) using SDFormatter on Win10
used balenaEtcher to flash the img to the SD card
inserted the SD into a Rasp PI 3 B+
went through the settings using PuTTY, PW for the pi user, local zone changed to Berlin
went through the settings using the UI from OctoPrint
got the update info to update to 1.3.12
clicked on "Update"

got this error in the "Update" window/popup

So, I found the corresponding ticket in the pip issue tracker:

What I do not understand is why I have never seen this before if it's a general issue with pip 19.0.1 as comes preinstalled with OctoPi 0.16. Maybe it is somehow related to the config changes you did... I'll have to try to reproduce it that way.

In any case, try the following via SSH:

source ~/oprint/bin/activate
pip install -U pip

That should install a newer version of pip which should have this particular bug fixed as far as I understand the aforementioned issue.

Exact same errors as Bigwerth when trying to update. Upgrading pip to version 19.3.1 fixed it, and the update went through.

Install process:
Etcher to write .img to SD Card
Notepad++ to change WiFi info
SSH via PuTTY
raspi-config to set password and time-zone (Mountain Time)
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y
reboot
Went to IP in browser and went through first time set-up
Clicked the notification for the update and started it

Hardware:
Raspberry Pi 3b+
SD Card: SanDisk 64GB Extreme ( SDSQXA2-064G-GN6MA)

I'm wondering if a dependency update happened since release of 1.3.12 that is now causing these kinds of issues in the field.

As far as I understand the pip issue it can be caused by any kind of package that's pulled in during an install, so that would make sense...

So I just tried this myself. Started with a fresh OctoPi 0.16 with OctoPrint 1.3.10. Updated to 1.3.12.

pip is 9.0.1. I don't get why some people are seeing this, but at least it doesn't appear to be a general issue for everyone now. I'll still add an FAQ entry for it.

Using a Samsung microSHDC 32GB card
Using a Kingston microSHDC 8GB card
Restarting OctoPrint in safe mode
Re-downloading octopi-stretch-lite-0.16.0 image and re-etching with balenaEtcher

What hardware are you using?

I had the same issue, Was able to fix it by upgrading "PIP"
sudo apt-get update
source ~/oprint/bin/activate
pip install -U pip
